SCAM TARGETS ELDERLY – COURIER FRAUD

"Courier" fraud is a real issue at the moment and has been for over a year now. Officers from Scotland Yard, Operation Sterling have issued this advice on how it is done.

The method used by these scammers is that the victim is cold called at home on their land line number. The scammer then either pretends to be the police or from the victims bank. The scammer will say that there has been a compromise on their account and that in order to investigate it and catch the suspects responsible the card needs to be collected ASAP for forensic or other issues. They are then asked for the pin number to the card which they may give verbally over the telephone, these people are very convincing. Sometimes  the victim is asked to key in the pin number on their telephone keypad. A simple "App" called "Blue Box" for example decodes the tone to the number keyed in. In addition to verify the fraud the victim is advised to phone their bank or the police to confirm what they have just been told. This is when of course the victim's line has been held open by the suspect who does not hang up their end.
Once the victim is convinced a "courier" is sent round to the victims address to collect the card. The courier is more often than not an innocent cab driver sent to collect from A to B or the suspects themselves.

Pass this on to as many people as possible - the only way to stop this is to catch these nasty criminals or prevent them from deceiving elderly people.

If you hear about a scam like this phone Fryent Safer Neighbourhood team or Operation Sterling at Scotland Yard.

And remember - NEVER GIVE YOUR PIN TO ANYONE

Bogus Gas Man in Fryent

We have received a report from Fryent Safer Neighbourhood Team of a scam currently operating in the Fryent, Kingsbury and Kenton area. I have copied details of the scam below for information. Please pass this on and ask people to be vigilante. People who have been victims of this scam have not lost a lot of money but it could have been much worse.

Cllr George Crane

BRITISH GAS SCAM
Please be aware that we have had several reports of a male cold calling in Kenton purporting to be from British Gas.
He produces what appears to be a genuine British Gas photo ID card with a name and registration number and carries a clip board.
He asks to read your meter and then informs you that he needs to fit a filter to the meter. He asks to make an appointment to fit the filter and then asks for a £5 payment for which he issues a receipt.
We have spoken to British Gas and have been told that they do not fit filters onto meters and the representative would not ask for any payment. This is a scam.
Utility companies will contact you in advance of any planned work that needs carrying out in your home. They will not ask for payment on the day. If someone calls from a utility company please carefully check their identification BEFORE letting them in your home. If you are in any doubt call the company concerned using the customer service number on your bill. British Gas use a company called G4S AccuRead for their meter readings. To verify the validity of a meter reader they can be contacted on 0845 300 3177.
The description of the suspect involved in these incidents is a white male, chubby build with a round face, in his 30s, black hair and an Eastern European accent.
If a person matching this description knocks on your door asking to fit a filter to your meter, as above please contact police immediately using 999.
If you think you have been a victim of this scam please contact Harrow Police on 0300 123 1212 or your Safer Neighbourhood Team.

Fryent SNT Partnership Day

Joined Sgt Matt Howard, PC Richard Stout and PCSO Anna Szymanska from the Fryent Safer Neighbourhood team outside Kingsbury Library this morning together with Brent Council Community Safety Team.

They had set up a stall to meet local residents who have had issues with Anti Social Behaviour in the area. They also spent time advising on crime prevention, and recording mobile numbers from school children for a database if they ever get stolen.

If Fryent residents have have problems with Anti Social Behaviour you can report it at this link:
